According to the authentic old legend on verso of this work (see our image nr.), it is a portrait of Heinrich Wilhelm August Georg Buff (1807-1867), Hauptmann (captain) of army of the Kingdom of Netherlands. He appears to be over thirty years of age - a detail suggesting that this portrait was executed in the early 1840s. The information discovered on the Web informs one that he was the son of Ludwig Buff, a retired Netherlandish Hauptmann living in Roedelheim (suburb of Frankfurt am Main). His paternal aunt Charlotte Buff (1753-1828) was the prototype for Lotte in Johann Wolfgang Goethe's "The Sorrows of Young Werther". His elder brother, Johann Heinrich Buff (1805-1878) was a well-known German physicist and chemist. His younger brother Georg Friedrich Buff (1809-1832) also served in the army of Kingdom of Netherlands.

This work was without doubt painted in Germany (the mountainous landscape in the background is not typical for the Netherlands) or - to be more precise - in the area of sitter family's residence (Frankfurt am Main). This oil painting demonstrates all stylistic criteria of portrait works of the leading local artist Eduard von Steinle (for comparison, see our image nr.11) and was executed, if not by the artist himself, by one of his pupils.

The famous Austro-German historical and nazarene painter of the 19th century Eduard von Steinle studied at the Vienna Academy (he began his studies in 1823 at the age of 13) under V.G.Kininger and L.Kupelwieser. From 1828 he worked in Rome in the circle of nazarene painters Overbeck, Cornelius, Veit and Fuehrich. From 1837 the artist was active in Germany, in 1850 became a professor of historical painting at the "Staedelsches Institut" in Frankfurt a.M. His works are displayed in the greatest public collections in Austria and abroad.
