This superior quality miniature on ivory was executed in the early 1830s in Vienna by the city's leading miniaturist Emanuel Thomas Peter. It is a (to this point unknown to art historians) portrait of celebrated German-Austrian actress Amalie Haizinger.
Amalie Haizinger (or Neumann-Haizinger, née Morstadt) was born on May 6, 1800 in Karlsruhe (then - the capital of Grand Duchy Baden) and died on August 10, 1884 in Vienna. She debuted in 1810 (at the age of 10!) at the Karlsruhe Theater. In 1816, she married the actor Carl Neumann. Her talent for profitably performing stage plays developed very rapidly. On tours, which extended as far as Paris, London and St. Petersburg, she found enthusiastic applause.
After the death of her first husband, she married Viennese opera tenor Anton Haizinger (1796-1869; CLICK HERE) in 1827 and worked with him in Karlsruhe and Vienna. In 1836, a book was published about her.
In 1846, she participated in an engagement at the Burgtheater in Vienna, where she worked in the stock role "funny old lady", until her death on 10 August 1884.
She had two children with her first husband. Both Adolphine Neumann and Luise Neumann were notable actresses.
The name of the actress is memorialized in Wien 18 (Währing) in form of a road (Haizingergasse) and a high school in this street.
Our images nr.8-11 show two other portraits of Amalie Haizinger and provide her extensive biography (also, CLICK HERE).
Emanuel Thomas Peter (1799 Jaegerndorf - 1873 Vienna) was a very well-known Austrian portrait miniaturist of the 19th century. From 1818 he studied at the Vienna Academy, at first architecture and then miniature painting under the famous Moritz Michael Daffinger. He copied a lot of Daffinger's miniatures with such artistic skill, that it is often impossible to distinguish between copies and originals. After a stay in Silezia Peter returned to Vienna in 1830 and became there one of the leading miniaturists. His best works were created between 1830 and 1850s.
