Housed in a splendid silver Italian (Roman) Baroque frame (our mage nr.13 shows a similar Roman frame), this is a premium quality miniature on copper with a portrait of a young lady referred to on verso as "Principesa donna Olimpia". According to the same legend on verso, this is a work of the famous Italian Baroque painter Carlo Maratti. And indeed, this small-sized painting meets stylistic criteria of works by this master, who aside from his being a religious painter, was also a spectacular portraitist.

The sitter, Olimpia Giustiniani (1641-1729) was an Italian noblewoman of the princely houses of Giustianini and Barberini. She was the grand-niece of Pope Innocent X and wife of Maffeo Barberini, Prince of Palestrina (she married in age of 12; see our image nr.14).

Carlo Maratti (1625 Camerano - 1713 Rome) studied nearly round-the-clock as a youth in a life "far removed from every form of juvenile levity", according to his early biographer. Maratti arrived in Rome at age twelve and stayed to become one of the city's leading painters of the late 1600s. From the 1650 success of a large altarpiece, Maratti's career was a string of triumphs. By century's end, his late Baroque classicism was not only Rome's predominant style but the accepted court style of Louis XIV's France (for what it looks like - see our painting! - B.W.).
At the age of eighty Maratti was still painting, teaching, and serving as president of the Accademia di San Luca.
