According to the old legend on verso of this miniature, it is a portrait of German artist Johann August Nahl the Younger as a young man.
Johann August Nahl the Younger was born on January 2, 1752 at estate Tanne by Zollikofen, Switzerland (other sources suggest he was born on January 7, 1752 by Os Hermundigen, Kanton Bern, Switzerland).
He grew up in Kassel - the city, in which his father worked. At first, he took lessons in sculpture from his father. Later, between the years 1763 and 1764, he studied at the studio of Johann Heinrich Tischbein the Elder (called "Kassel-Tischbein"). Thereafter, he moved to Strasbourg, where he studied (1765-1767) landscape painting with Tanesch and Christoph v. Bemmel. From 1767 to 1770 he studied portrait painting in Bern under Emanuel Handmann.
In 1771/72, he again lived in Kassel. In 1773, he went to Paris and attended the Academy there. Nahl spent the next several years in Rome and returned to Kassel only in 1781.
One year later (1782), he moved to London and remained there for 15 months. In 1783 he returned to Italy and lived in Rome with interruptions for trips to Naples (1786), London (1787), Kassel (1787/88) and Switzerland (1791). In 1772, he finally moved from Italy to Kassel, where he remained until his death on January 30, 1825.
Johann August Nahl the Younger was mainly active as painter of historical and mythological scenes. In 1814, he was appointed Director (and Professor of painting class) of the Kassel Academy.
Works of this artist can be viewed in various German museums.
