Important and relatively rare for the current art market original work of the best Russian watercolor portrait artist of the 1st half of 19th century, Petr Fedorovich Sokolov. It seems to be (according to sitter's dress and hairstyle) one of his late works. And really it happened to be executed in period between 1845 and 1848 (artist's death year).
In June 2018 we discovered on Facebook just published by well-known Moscow art historian Alexander B. Savinoff, dated 1845, lithographic portrait of our (2-3 years older) sitter (see our image nr.20).
His name: Prince Nikolai Pavlovich Golitsyn.
According to relatively poor information found on Web we learn following:
Prince Nikolai Pavlovich Golitsyn was born on 6th September 1814 at estate of his mother's parents in village Tashan', Malorossia (Ukraine). He was a son of Prince Pavel Alekseevich Golitsyn (1782-1848) and his wife Varvara Sergeevna Kagul'skaya (1794-1845). One of his sisters, Varvara Pavlovna married Count Vasili Sergeevich Sheremetev. Exactly in latter's album A. S. Savinov found aforementioned lithographic portrait.
Prince Nikolai Pavlovich had a court title of a "kamerger" (from German "Kamerherr"). He was also a government official in relatively high rank of a "nadvorny sovetnik" (court councilor). After 1861 he sold all his Russiann estates and settled in Heidelberg (then Kingdom of Wuerttemberg) where he died on 11th October 1886. His body was brought back to Russia and burried at family's cemetery in village Troitskoye, Moscowskaya Gubernia (formerly estate of his great-grandfather, Count P. A. Rumyantsev-Zadunaiski).
It is interesing to add that author of this portrait, Petr Sokolov executed in 1847 a series of portraits of the members of Golitsyn family (see images nr.21-24). This fact let us suppose that our portrait is one of them...
Petr Fedorovich Sokolov (1791 Moscow - 1848 village Stary Merchik, Kharkov Gouv.) was in 1800 (at the age of 9) enrolled in St. Petersburg Academy, where he joined the class of historical painting under V.K. Shebuev. In 1809, he obtained a gold academic medal. Still, he found his true vocation in another genre: shortly after graduating from the Academy (1810) he began painting portraits, at first, using Italian graphite as medium, later - watercolor.
He lived in St. Petersburg, from 1842 to 1843 - in Paris, and from 1846 - in Moscow. Sokolov portrayed royalties and members of the high aristocracy. Among his sitters were Empress Elisabeth Alexeevna, Grand Duchesses Maria Nikolaevna (sic!) and Olga Nikolaevna, the 3-year-old Grand Duke Alexander Nikolaevich (later, Tsar Alexander II). Sokolov was married to the sister of the famous artist Karl Brullov.
While spending the year 1848 at the estate of Countess Orlova-Denisova near Kharkov (Ukraine), the artist fell a victim to cholera that was then raging all throughout the region.
