Found through antique trade in Switzerland, it is an extremely important (painted from life in Italian town Parma on April 1, 1862) miniature portrait of famous Italian general, politician and nationalist Giuseppe Garibaldi (CLICK HERE).
It is known that Garibaldi arrived in Parma (from 1860 this town was part of the United Kingdom of Italy) on March 30, 1862 and remained there two weeks long. On April 1, he posed for this very miniature (it is signed "dal vivo (from life) /G. Naudin /fece 1.aprile /1862").
One day before, i.e. on March 31, 1862, Garibaldi was greeted by thunderous ovations by the workers of Parma and held a speech before them. In this speech, he declared himself a Republican, yet reminded his audience that Italy was created not by a Republican vote, but by a plebiscite that left Republicans in minority.
Giuseppe Naudin (1792 Parma - 1872 Parma) was a miniaturist but also painted interiors and landscapes. He was an Honorary Member of the Parma Academy of Fine Arts and a court artist of Duchess Maria Luise (former wife of Napoleon I). He also collaborated with another Parma painter - P. Toschi.
Our images nr.10-11 offer Naudin's extensive biography.
We would like to add that two years after painting this portrait, on March 4, 1864, Naudin exhibited its replica (painted not on ivory but on glass) at an art exhibition in Turin (see our image nr.12).
For another miniature portrait with a similar narrative, see our web #38959.
