This work was executed by Prussian court miniaturist Johann Heusinger in 1816 in Berlin or Potsdam. It is a very important portrait of 18-year-old Princess Charlotte of Prussia (1798-1860; CLICK HERE) - the eldest daughter of King Friedrich Wilhelm III and his late wife Queen Luise. In this portrait she is pictured as the bride (her wedding will take place in the following (1817) year in St. Petersburg) of Grand Duke Nikolai Pavlovich of Russia (CLICK HERE). After the wedding, she was renamed into her subsequent Russian name "Alexandra Fedorovna".
For two other miniature portraits of her by Heusinger (both portraits show her in approximately same age), see our image nr.7.

Johann Heusinger was very likely born in Wolfenbuettel in 1769 and died in 1846. Heusinger was a miniature painter, who worked in Berlin from 1789. In the same year he also began exhibiting his works at the Academy of the same city. In the beginning of the 19th century he was appointed teacher of drawing to the Crown prince Friedrich Wilhelm IV and his brother. He also worked as a designer for the porcelain factory of Berlin for a long time. Schidlof writes: "Heusinger was a clever artist.. He signed with his name or: J.H., followed by the date, or: H.
