Giuseppe Martorelli-Attrib. "Neapolitan Official Giuseppe Avellino", oil on canvas, ca. 1825
Price: 3900 EUR
(please note additional 13% tax applies for transactions concluded within the European Union)
In this portrait, the sitter is depicted in gala uniform of a high-ranking official of the Kingdom of Two Sicilies. He is also the bearer of two Neapolitan awards (the second of the two (hang on blue ribbon) is the Knight's Cross of (established in 1816) Order of Two Sicilies). Due to these attributes and, in light of his relatively young appearance (though his career began in 1814), we suggest the date estimate of this portrait's execution as ca. 1825.
The name of the sitter is offered in the lower margin (note the artist's detailed, painted title "C.(avaliere) Giuseppe M. Avellino /uditore al Consiglie di Stato /Seg.(retario) Gen-(rali)te delle Acque e Forestale" (English: "auditor of the State Council and secretary of the Council for Forestry and Water"). The materials available on the Web (see our images nr.13-15) inform one that Giuseppe Avellino was the resident of town Avellino (sic! this town is now the center of province Avellino in Campania region of Southern Italy; back, in the 1820s, it was the main town of province Principato Ulteriori of the Kingdom of Two Sicilies). He is mentioned as a Neapolitan specialist of park architecture, active between 1814 and 1860. Moreover, the Web documents reveal that from 1833 to 1853, he was the director of famous Villa Reale in Naples (see our image nr.15).
Our comparison images nr.16-18 convincingly demonstrate that this painting could very well be an original work of portrait and historical painter Giuseppe Martorelli, who was mentioned as an artist living and working in Naples in the 1820/40s.
