Johannes Baptista van Acker (also Vanacker) was born in Brugge in 1794, and died in the same town in 1863. He was a pupil of Ducq. After gaining considerable recognition, van Acker travelled to Paris in 1834, carrying with him recommendations addressed to Isabey and Saint. After living in Paris for some years he was summoned to Brussels by Leopold I (King of Belgium) who appointed him a painter to the court. Van Acker also briefly stayed in London. Schidlof says, that van Acker's fine technique is very French and can be compared to the school of Augustin, but one nevertheless feels certain foreign elements.
