Our comparison image nr.7 convincingly proves that we are dealing here with an extremely rare miniature portrait of Ernst II Leopold, the ruling Landgrave of Hessen-Rotenburg (German landgravinate, Rothenberg an der Fulda being its capital).
Ernst II Leopold of Hesse-Rotenburg was born on June 15, 1684, in Langenschwalbach, and died in Rothenburg and der Fulda on November 29, 1749. He was the eldest son of Wilhelm I the Elder, Landgrave of Hessen-Rheinfels-Rotenburg (1648-1725) and his wife Marie Anna, nee Countess von Loewenstein-Wertheim-Rochefort (1652-1688).
Ernst II Leopold succeeded his father in 1725 after the latter's death. He became a Regent of the first half of total area of Hessen-Rotenburg, which was previously solely ruled by his father (CLICK HERE), while the second half called "Wahnfried Quart" went to its new ruler - Ernst II Leopold's cousin Christian of Hessen-Wahnfried.
On November 9, 1704, he married Eleonore Anna von Loewenstein-Weitheim. They had fours sons and six daughters (one of them, Polyxena Christina Johannetta (1706-1735) became later the consort of King Carl Emanuel III of Sardinia).
Our comparison images nr.10-15 demonstrate that this very good quality miniature could (with nearly 100% certainty!) be the work of Hessian (sic!) artist, court portraitist (and miniaturist!) of Duchy Hessen-Darmstadt, Johann Christian Fiedler.
Johann Christian Fiedler (1697 Pirna - 1765 Darmstadt) was at first a law student and from 1717 began to paint miniatures. After going to Paris to complete his studies in painting he returned to Germany in 1724 and settled in Darmstadt where the Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig appointed him court painter the following year. This appointment was renewed by Ludwig VIII when the latter took over the government in 1738. In November 1754 Fiedler received the title "Ober Cabinett- und Hofmahler" with the rank of counsellor.
Schidlof says further: "Fiedler was a clever artist who worked as a "pointlliste" (sic!-B.W.)".
