On view here is a rare and very important miniature portrait of 30/35-year-old Karl Alexander, 5th Prince of Thurn and Taxis (1770-1827; see our image nr.6), head of the so-called Thurn-und-Taxis-Post, and - from 1805 - Head of the Princely House of Thurn and Taxis.
His residence town was the Imperial City of Regensburg, Holy Roman Empire (until 1806; in 1806, Regensburg became the official capital of Principality Thurn and Taxis in Confederation of Rhein).
According to his hairstyle and (especially) uniform, Karl Alexander is depicted in the period between 1805 and 1806. In this portrait, he wears the uniform of a "General-Erb-Postmeister" (head of the Imperial mail; he occupied this post from November 13, 1805 until August 6, 1806) and the Knight's Cross of the Austrian Order of the Golden Fleece.

For a portrait of his wife Therese, nee Duchess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, sister of Queen Luise of Prussia, see our web #38422.
Our image nr.7 shows a very similar representation of the prince: it is another of his miniature portraits from the same period, similarly executed by Anton Oechs.
According to Schidlof, Anton Oechs was the older brother of portrait miniaturist Joseph Domenicus Oechs and father of Joseph Oechs (also a miniaturist). He painted in oils and worked as a miniaturist from about 1787 in Regensburg and from about 1790 in Offenbach. Schidlof adds that he was "a very skilful miniaturist and in my opinion better than his brother Joseph Domenicus".
