An early-19-th-century collector (or an art dealer) and once - the owner of this superior quality Rococo miniature, was clearly keen on creating a suitable profile of the depicted young lady. His or her idea was thus to link her identity in one way or another to that of an eminent personality. In doing so, the collector (art dealer?) had applied a handwritten inscription to verso of this piece: "M-e de Grafigny".
This writing clearly refers to celebrated French novelist, playwright and socialite Françoise de Graffigny (1695-1758; CLICK HERE). However, the depicted young (she appears to be at most thirty years of age) aristocratic lady could by no means be Françoise de Graffigny, for she is dressed and coiffed according to fashion of the mid-18th century (or ca. 1750), i.e when the latter was already 55.
Our comparison image nr.11, as well as OTHER WORKS OF THIS ARTIST IN OUR POSSESSION strongly suggest that the author of this piece was French court miniaturist Jean-Daniel Welper.
Jean Daniel Welper (ca. 1730 Strassburg - 1789 Paris) was a miniature painter to Louis XV and a drawing teacher to the King's daughters. The greater part of Welper's miniatures were mounted on valuable boxes and used as gifts offered to foreign diplomats.
