According to sitter's dress and hairstyle, this very good quality work was executed in the early 1800s. It is a portrait of a gentleman, called on verso L. v.(on) Galanski. He bears insignia (distinktorium) of a "Domherr" (canon (capitular)) of one of the cathedrals in Prussia.
Barbara Krafft (born Steiner) was born in 1764 in Iglau, Moravia (now Czech Republic) in a family of painter Johann Steiner. She studied under her father, who introduced her to portrait painting. She accompanied her father to Vienna, where her first portrait was exhibited in 1786. Barbara Steiner became a Member of the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, married a chemist Joseph Krafft. In 1794 she moved to Salzburg, where she became the most asked portraitist. Barbara Krafft-Steiner spent the last four years of her life in Bamberg, Germany, where she died in 1825. She was also a renowned portrait miniaturist, who worked mainly in oil. Her works are displayed in the Austrian National Gallery Belvedere and in other noted Austrian and German museums.
