Portrait of a gentleman wearing a red ribbon of Legion d'Honneur (obviously awarded during period of First Empire - thousands of awarded to that time persons refused during Restoration to bear a new, Royal model of this order's cross (with a profile of Henri IV) preffering only a red ribbon - practically a sign of their loyality to Napoleon. Most of them were retired Napoleonic officers, who still received from Royal government a salary, but only a half of former one - so called "demi-soldes").

Until today there was a certain misunderstanding with French artist Alexandre Chaponnier (also Chaponniere). Dictionnaries by Mme Lemoine-Bouchard, Blank and Sauer mention an artist with that name who was born in 1753 in Geneva and was active in the late 18th to early 19th century in Paris. Blank says the artist died in 1805, Sauer says "after 1805" or even in 1830 and Mme Lemoine-Bouchard says he died in 1850 (she surely found the death of artist Alexandre Chaponnier mentioned in archives). This late date provided by Mme Lemoine-Bouchard means the artist would have died aged 97 which seems rather unlikely.
Both Blank and Sauer say Alexandre Chaponnier had a son, also an artist and also working in his father's main speciality - engravings and lithography. We are sure his first name was also Alexandre and that it was the mentioning of his death in 1850 that Mme Lemoine Bouchard found in the archives. His father, Alexandre Chaponnier the Elder really died in 1805 and was solely an engraver (and not a lithographer). His son on the contrary besides doing engravings was also active as miniaturist and watercolor portrait artist.
