Portrait of Francois Joseph Charles Marie Comte de Mercy Argenteau (1780-1869; see our image nr.18)) painted in 1820s by the famous French portrait miniaturist Daniel Saint. Although not in perfect condition, this portrait belongs among the best and most important works of this artist.

Francois Joseph Charles Marie comte de Mercy Argenteau d'Ochain served Napoleon I as a "grand chambellan" and an ambassador and minister plenipotentiary to Munich. After the fall of the Napoleonic empire and the creation of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, he became the Governor of Brabant and the "grand chambellan" of King Willem I. Retired he lived by Liege (see our image nr.12; image nr.13 shows the book of his memoirs first published in 1860).

Daniel Saint (1778 Saint-Lô, France - 1847 Saint-Lô) was a pupil of Isabey, Regnault and Aubry. He specialized in miniatures and became Isabey's principal collaborator in execution of official portraits. He took part in most of Salons between the years 1804 and 1839, and obtained a 2nd class medal in 1806 and a 1st class - in 1808. On several occasions Saint did portraits of the Empress Josephine. Napoleon commissioned a portrait from him and sent it - adorned with diamonds worth 150000 francs - to Marie-Louise in Vienna. The emperor's decision to order a portrait from Saint was supposedly very much influenced by the fact that Napoleon saw and favoured another work by the artist, namely a miniature portrait of Prince Kourakine exhibited by Saint at the Salon of 1810. Saint was not only appreciated in the Empire period, but also became one of the most popular miniaturists under Charles X and Louis-Philippe, whose portraits he did on several occasions.
Schidlof says further: "...Saint may be considered as one of the greatest French miniaturists of the 19th century. He was very close to equalling Isabey and Augustin...".

Our two last additional images show his other works offered at the international art auction market in the last years.

Hellman, New York (he edited in 1917 the English version of the mentioned sitter's memoirs); Auction House "William Doyle Galleries" New York, 24 January 2007, Lot 1133 (together with miniature portrait of the sitter's relative - Florimond-Claude Comte de Mercy Argenteau by Antoine Vestier; see our web gallery # 28099).

This miniature is illustrated in the dictionary "Les Peintres et Miniature actifs en France 1650-1850" by Nathalie Lemoine-Bouchard (published in spring 2008; see our image nr. 11).
