The authentic legend on verso of this work handwritten by the sitter's niece, reads as follows: "Graf /Alexander /Sandor /Bruder meiner /Mutter Mina /Festetics" (English: Count Alexander Sandor, brother of my mother Mina ("Wilhelmina" - B.W.) Festetics". The depicted young (practically adolescent) man holds a folio with the following script on its cover: "Dessine /18825 (1/8 (18)25 - B.W.) /von A.S. (by A(lexander) S(andor) - B.W.)". Hence, we are dealing here with a self-portrait of certain Count Alexander Sandor, who (judging by his visual appearance and the date on the folio) was born sometime between 1805 and 1810, and who was the brother of certain Wilhelmina (Wilhelmine) - born Countess Sandor, married - Countess Festetics.
The only woman, bearing the same first, birth and married name(s) was (known in the 1st third of the 19th century) Wilhelmine Countess Sandor de Szlavincza (1800-1864). In 1823, the latter married Count Albert Johann Festetics de Tolna.

But! According to genealogical information found on the Web (see our image nr.12), Wilhelmina had only one brother - the renowned rider (one finds on the Web countless stories about his equestrian achievements) Count Moricz (Moritz) Sandor (1805-1878). It would not be possible to identify Count Moricz Sandor as "our" Alexander, because, in contrary to the latter, he had brown hair. For that reason, we are certain to be dealing with (thus far unknown to contemporary genealogists) the younger brother of Wilhelmine and Moricz Sandor - Count Alexander Sandor. The latter clearly passed away at a very young age, having left no notable traces in the chronicles of his family.

Provenance:
1) one of the two daughters of Countess Wilhelmina Festetics-Sandor
2) Vienna auction house "Dorotheum" (1950s - see our images nr.9-10)
3) Vienna private collection
