An extreme rarity at the current antique market, this miniature is a work of well-known, 19th-century Italian painter (also portrait miniaturist!) of Jewish descent, Giosuč Bianchi.
Giosuč Bianchi (1803 Monza, Northern Italy - 1875 Monza) was a member of well-known Lombardian family of artists. He was the father of painters Mosč di Giosuč Bianchi and Gerado Bianchi, and grandfather of Pompeo Mariani.
Having received a scholarship from Casa Arconati, he trained at Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera (Milan) with engraver Giuseppe Longhi. Besides painting several oil portraits, Bianchi primarily dedicated himself to religious painting (working on altar paintings and frescoes). He was, however, also active as a watercolor artist and miniaturist. He held a long tenure as a drawing teacher at the Collegio dei Barnabiti and Collegio Bosisio in the city of Monza.
