Raphail Alexandrovich Stupin "High-ranking official of Imperial Court Office", watercolor, ca. 1830 2250 EUR
Raphail Alexandrovich Stupin "High-ranking official of Imperial Court Office", watercolor, ca. 1830
We are dealing here with a portrait of a (still anonymous) high-ranking official (note on his neck the Cross of Russian Order of St. Anna of the 2nd class), wearing a dark-blue coat with yellow buttons (they are stamped with a monogram of Tsar Nikolai I ("NI"- for Nikolai the First). It seems he served in the Office (Ministry) of the Imperial Court which was founded in 1826 (see our image nr.14). On his coat, besides the Cross of St. Anna, he wears the chest cross of the Order of St. Vladimir of the 4th class, "Dvoryanskaya", medal of 1812 and the "Badge of distinction of immaculate 20-year-long service" (introduced in 1827). Although unsigned, this watercolor (and our comparison images nr. 9-12 convincingly demonstrate it) is a typical work of well-known Russian artist of the 1st half of the 19th century - Raphail Alexandrovich Stupin.
Raphail Alexandrovich Stupin was born in 1798 (S.S. Akimov (CLICK HERE writes that Stupin was born in 1797) and died after 1861. He was a son of academician Alexander Vasilievich Stupin (1778-1861) and founder of famous Arzamas School of Painting (CLICK HERE). In 1809-1819 at St. Petersburg Academy and in 1829 received a title of "artist of history painting" there. From 1819, he assisted his father at the Arzamas School while also teaching there. Later he lived in Kazan. There are known about twenty watercolor and gouache portraits painted by Stupin on paper (card). Some of them can be seen All-Russian Museum of A.S. Pushkin (St. Petersburg), State Museum of A.S. Pushkin (Moscow), Kazan Museum of Fine Art, etc.
