Joseph Dominik Oechs (1775 Erbach by Ulm, Bavaria - 1836 Mitau) began his career in Regensburg as pupil of his elder brother Anton Oechs (see our web #34286); later, in Nuremberg, he studied under Frost and, in Dresden, under Johann Chr. Klengel and Anton Graff. In 1804, he settled in Mitau (then Russian Empire; now - Jelgava, Latvia). While living there, Oechs also made trips to Riga, Dorpat (Tartu), St. Petersburg, Berlin and Dresden. In 1824, he became a drawing master at the Gymnasium of Mitau. He was also active as a copyist of the old royal portraits of Dukes of Courland.
