Eduard von Steinle-Attrib. "Artist's children (?)", oil on canvas, 1850s
Group portrait of two little brothers and their elder sister - a wonderful oil painting by (as we strongly believe) well-known Austro-German, 19th century artist Eduard von Steinle (1810 Vienna - 1886 Frankfurt am Main; our images nr.8-14 provide convincing comparison with latter's other works and his extensive biography). It seems the depicted children are that of artist's himself - teen-aged girl wit a book is his daughter Karoline and two 6/7-year old boys - her younger brothers.
The famous Austro-German historical and nazarene painter of the 19th century Eduard von Steinle studied at the Vienna Academy (he began his studies in 1823 at the age of 13) under V.G.Kininger and L.Kupelwieser. From 1828 he worked in Rome in the circle of nazarene painters Overbeck, Cornelius, Veit and Fuehrich. From 1837 the artist was active in Germany, in 1850 became a professor of historical painting at the "Staedelsches Institut" in Frankfurt a.M. His works are displayed in the greatest public collections in Austria and abroad.
