Josef Heigel "Three children of Maximilian I Joseph of Bavaria", important miniature!!, ca. 1802

Price: 2500  EUR

(please note additional 13% tax applies for transactions concluded within the European Union)

This with monogram J.H. high quality miniature on ivory is (as convincingly proves our image nr.9 with another miniature by this artist (offered in 1985 at Sotheby's London)) an original work of well-known Munich miniaturist of early 19th century, Josef Heigel. Moreover, two of depicted three children (surely two brothers and one sister) are the same sitters (some younger) as presented on Josef Heigel's miniature in image nr.9 (erroneously as Archduke Henry (Heinrich) and Archduchess Amalie of Austria - to that time (according to dresses and hair-styles - ca.1810 (not 1800 as in Sotheby's' catalogue!) there were no Habsburgs with these names! Moreover, Josef Heigel was not active at Vienna Court!).

We are sure of following:
on both miniatures there are children of Elector of Bavaria (sic! Josef Heigel was Bavarian artist), Maximilian Joseph (King Maximilian I Joseph from 1806). Our miniature with a very great possibility was made in 1802 - Prince Karl (first from left; CLICK HERE and see our image nr.10) was 7-year-old, Princess Amalia (sic!; CLICK HERE and see our image nr.11) - 1 year and Prince Ludwig (future King Ludwig I; CLICK HERE and see our image nr.12) - 16 years. Respectively, on Sotheby's' miniature we see 7-8 year-older Prince Karl and Princess Amalia...

Josef Heigel (1780 Munich - 1837 Paris) was born into a Munich based family of actors - his father was the actor of court theatre Josef Franz Heigel (1752-1811), all his brothers were actors, too.
In 1795 he came to Paris where he became a pupil of famous miniaturist Jean-Baptiste Isabey. From 1797-1806 he studied at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts. In that period he spent a lot of time copying historical paintings and portraits in "Hofgarten Galerie" (Royal Garden Gallery, Munich). From 1806 to 1819 he lived in Paris where he visited Isabey's studio again. In 1819 he returned to his hometown Munich, where he became court miniaturist. Between 1819 and 1828 he made several trips in Germany and visited Paris again. In 1828, via Berlin, Frankfurt a. Main and Darmstadt, he went to Paris where he remained until his death in 1837.
