Joseph Marie Bouton (1768 Cadiz - 1823 Chartres) was son and pupil of the French portrait miniaturist Guillaume-Gabriel Bouton. Already in 1776 at the age of 8 (!) he exhibited his drawings at the Royal Academy in Toulouse. After the death of his father, he became pupil of Francois Cammas and in 1786 exhibited his miniatures at the Salon du Capitole in Toulouse. In 1789 Bouton became member of the Royal Academy in Paris. In 1802 he was in Spain, where he had great success as miniaturist and in 1805 became painter of Queen Maria-Luisa. He moved back to Paris in 1808. Our friend, world-best specialist on portrait miniatures Dr. Bodo Hofstetter calls him the best miniaturist ever working at the Spanish court.
