Author's own, some larger replica of this miniature (also part of a golden pin) belongs to collection of Warsaw National Museum (see our image nr.6). Both variation demonstrate absolutely all stylistic criteria of works of famous 18th century, German painter (also miniaturist - see our images nr.7-8) Anton Raphael Mengs.

The sitter was probably one of living in Dresden aristocrats.

Anton Raphael Mengs (1728 Aussig, Bohemia - 1779 Rome) was an eminent German painter active in Rome, Madrid and Saxony, who became one of the precursors to Neoclassical painting.
His father, Ismael Mengs, a Danish painter, established himself as Saxonian court artist in Dresden, whence in 1741 he took his son to Rome.
In Rome, Anton Raphael Mengs' fresco painting of "Parnassus" at Villa Albani gained him a reputation as a master painter. His appointment as first painter to Friedrich Agustus, elector of Saxony, did not prevent his spending much time in Rome, where he had married in 1748, and where he became in 1754 director of the Vatican School of Painting, nor did this hinder him on two occasions from obeying the call of Charles III of Spain to Madrid. In 1777, Mengs returned to Rome, and there he died two years later, in poor circumstances, leaving twenty (!) children, seven of whom were pensioned by the King of Spain.
