According to the lady's dress and hairstyle, this portrait was painted in about 1770. Titled on verso "Gertrude Elisabeth von Roden /wife of /Carl Emil Vietor", this work is a miniature portrait of one of the female members of the old noble family of Counts von Roden living in Lower Saxony (area of Hanover).
A brief Web research resulted in the following information:
The lady's husband - Dr. Carl Emil Vietor (1730-1800) - was the "Landesgericht-Director" (Head of the Regional Court) in Kassel.
In its composition this miniature resembles works of living in the same period, famous German artist Anton Raphael Mengs; clearly our artist was strongly influenced by latter.
Anton Raphael Mengs (1728 Aussig, Bohemia - 1779 Rome) was an eminent German painter active in Rome, Madrid and Saxony, who became one of the precursors to Neoclassical painting.
His father, Ismael Mengs, a Danish painter, established himself as Saxonian court artist in Dresden, whence in 1741 he took his son to Rome.
In Rome, Anton Raphael Mengs' fresco painting of "Parnassus" at Villa Albani gained him a reputation as a master painter. His appointment as first painter to Friedrich Agustus, elector of Saxony, did not prevent his spending much time in Rome, where he had married in 1748, and where he became in 1754 director of the Vatican School of Painting, nor did this hinder him on two occasions from obeying the call of Charles III of Spain to Madrid. In 1777, Mengs returned to Rome, and there he died two years later, in poor circumstances, leaving twenty (!) children, seven of whom were pensioned by the King of Spain.
