Executed by Czech artist Gustav Boehm in 1916, it is a portrait of his friend (then, French senior artillery officer and later - a well-known engineer and member of the French Academy of Sciences) Jacques Charles Emile Jouguet (1871-1943; for biography and other portraits of this man, see our images nr.10-12).
The author of this small, yet deeply psychologically charged, portrait was in that period held in French custody due to his enemy-state, Austro-Hungarian citizenship. However, as one sees, this fact has not hindered his ability to associate with high-ranking officers of the French army.

Gustav Boehm (Böhm, Gustave Bohm) was born in 1885 into a Jewish family in Czech town Jindrichuv Hradec (then - Austrian province Bohemia) and died in 1974 in Agen, French department Lot-et-Garonne.
He first studied in Brno under Samuel Brunner and then continued his studies in Vienna, where he trained with Joseph Eugen Hoerwarter and Erwin Puchinger. He also studied in Paris (Academie Julian) and Munich (under Walther Thor). Concurrently, Boehm undertook numerous study trips across Europe, Egypt and Palestine. In 1914-1917 - as already mentioned - he was held in French custody. After the end of WWI, he returned to Brno, where he continuously exhibited until 1937.
In 1938/39, he immigrated (via Vienna) to France, and was granted French citizenship in 1951.
Gustav Boehm was a member of various artists groups across Europe: Bohemia (Czechoslovakia), Vienna, Berlin, Paris. Many of his works can be viewed in museums of the Czech Republic (Brno, Prague) and France (Musée des Beaux-Arts in Agen, Musée Carnavalet in Paris, etc.).
