This work is a fine addition to our web # 31077 and # 35814. It is a (still set into original leather traveling case) miniature portrait of yet another officer of the same Bavarian 3rd Line Infantry Regiment "Prinz Karl". According to two tabs on his collar, he was an Oberlieutenant (1st. lieutenant). He bears the Chevalier Cross of Napoleonic Order of Legion of Honor (in theory, it could be a signpost in defining his identity) and Bavarian Memorial Cross for participants of Liberation (anti-Napoleonic) War of 1813/15 (the latter (awardings for campaigns of 1813/14 took place already in early 1815) provides also the lower time border of miniature's execution).

In 1815, among the lieutenants (Unterlieutenants and Oberlieutenants) of the 3rd Line Infantry Regiment there was only one man in possession of both mentioned awards - Oberlieutenant Wilhelm Caries. He was born in 1791; on 25th September 1812 (for distiction at the 1st Battle of Polotsk in Russia) he was awarded Chevalier Cross of French Legion of Honor (he was then still Unterlieutenant - see our images 8-9). In 1814 he was promoted to Oberlieutenant. In 1838 we meet him as already retired major general.
On presented here portrait he is 24-year-old.
