An old label on verso of this work offers the name of its sitter - a relatively young lady in red dress in "Troubadour" style - "Baronin Clement /geb. /Baronin Zuylen" (Baroness Clement, nee Baroness Zuylen). Some information found on the Web (see our images nr.9-10) reveals that her full name was Mathilde, Freifrau (Baroness) von Clement du Mez, nee Freiin (daughter of baron) Zyulen van Nyevelt. Her husband, Franz Freiherr (Baron) von Clement du Metz, Austrian colonel, chamberlain and district prefect died in Regensburg (then, Kingdom of Bavaria) in September 1831, leaving her a widow (details of her further life remain unknown). What is known is that in 1839 she was awarded the Austrian Lady's "Sternkreuz-Orden" (Order of Star Cross).

This very good quality miniature on ivory is yet another work of South German miniaturist Joseph Bernhard Einsle IN OUR POSSESSION.

Joseph Bernhard Einsle (1774 Goeggingen - 1829 Augsburg) was a well known portrait miniaturist in South Germany with many commissions of middle class customers. His first dated miniature of the King of Wuerttemberg is from 1803, although already in 1796 his name was mentioned in books as "Mahler (Maler., i.e. artist) in Augsburg". In 1806 Einsle married in his native town Goeggingen and from 1810 lived in Constanz at lake Bodensee). In 1817 he moved to Augsburg, where he lived - apart from short stays in Munich and Frankfurt a.M. - until his death in 1829.
