Johann Lorenz Kreul "Nuremberg Merchant Georg Jakob Hering and his wife", two fine pastels, 1800/05 2000 EUR
Johann Lorenz Kreul "Nuremberg Merchant Georg Jakob Hering and his wife", two fine pastels, 1800/05
According to the old authentic inscriptions on verso of each of the two pastels, we are dealing with portraits of a merchant by the name "Hering" from Nuremberg and his wife (their dresses and hairstyles suggest the early 1800s).
Johann Lorenz Kreul (1765 Erlbach - 1840 Nuremberg) began his studies under G. Ph. Zwinger at the Art School of Nuremberg. Apart from that, he took lessons from Ansbach court artist Friedrich Cotthard Naumann (see his work in our possession). He made numerous study trips through Germany, before settling for two years in Stuttgart on invitation of Duke of Wuerttemberg, and becoming the latter's royal portraitist. In 1807, he moved to Nuremberg. His son, Johann Friedrich Karl Kreul (1804-1867) was also a well-known portraitist. This explains why our artist is often referred to as Johann Lorenz Kreul the Elder.
