We are dealing with a very important, executed by French artist Magues portrait of the leader of Carlist Revolt in Spain, Infante Carlos de Bourbon, Count of Molina, also called Don Carlos (1788-1855; see our images nr 9-10 with extensive biography and other portraits of his). This portrait was made by Magues during his visit to Carlist headquarters in Northern Spain in 1837.
Not much information exists about the author of this portrait Isidore Jean-Baptiste Magues. It is known that he was born in 1809 or 1810 in Toulouse and died in poverty in about 1869 in London, where he had lived since the early 1850s. It is also known that between 1839-1852 he was active in Paris and Berlin (see also our image 12 with his obituary).
