Offered here is one of the early works of French military and battle artist Édouard Detaille.
Jean Baptiste Édouard Detaille (1848 Paris - 1912 ibidem) was a famous French battle and historical painter of the late 19th - early 20th century. At the age of 17 he studied under Meissonier. The artist made a long trip in Algeria, which was interrupted by the Franco-Prussian war. Detaille participated in this war as staff officer and recorded many war events in his drawings. After the war he won great popularity as a militarian painter. Detaille regularly exhibited in the Parisian Salon, in 1895 was appointed President of "Societe des Artistes Francais". He was also a member of the greatest foreign Academies. His works are represented in almost all French museums, in Metropolitan Museum, in Chicago Art Institute, in Sydney, Budapest, etc.
