A miniature on ivory with a portrait of a female artist named (on verso) as Mme Vigee Lebrun. Clearly, it refers to the only French female artist of such name - the renowned neoclassical and empire portrait painter Madame Marie Louise Elisabeth Vigee-Lebrun (1755-1842). Nevertheless we don't believe it is her portrait...
Provenance: famous Collection Bernard-Franck, Paris.
Bernard-Franck was a veteran of the 1870 Franco-Prussian War, who later in life became a wealthy manufacturer of military equipment. He had a very important collection of paintings and works of art from the Napoleonic Epoch (see our image nr.10).
Condition: fairly good; vertical crack crossing sitter's right schoulder
