Johann Mueller (Müller) was born on the 6th of December 1762 (and not in 1755 as suggested in "Schweizerischer Künstler-Lexikon"; see our image nr.20) in Waldkirch by Saint-Gall (St. Gallen) in Switzerland. Still as a poor peasant youth, Mueller was drawing red chalk head studies. In 1780, in St. Gallen, an opportunity arose for him to copy a number of engravings using crayon manner, as well as to make portrait drawings of whole families from the region. By doing so, Mueller always sketched only the left (sic!) side of a person's profile. He left St. Gallen for Zurich and Basel. In Basel, he turned to drawing portraits with silver point instead of red chalk and using a smaller-scale format (practically as miniatures). From that point on, he set off on travels throughout different places in Germany, where he then discovered the wealthy clientele. He usually wintered in St. Gallen.
