Mme Marie Anne Fragonard, nee Gerard, was born in 1745 in Grasse and died in Paris in 1823. She was the eldest of the seventeen siblings (her younger sister Marguerite later became a famous painter known as Marguerite Gerard). After Marie Anne displayed talent for drawing, she traveled to Paris to train at the studio of Fragonard, and later, in 1769, became his wife. She mainly painted miniatures on ivory and, in 1779, exhibited two portraits of young girls at the Salon de la Corresspondence. The Museum of Besanšon owns a miniature by Mme Fragonard; it is a portrait of the architect Trouart (see our additional image with excerpt from "Les Peintres en miniature /1650-1850" by Nathalie Lemoine-Bouchard).
