According to the old authentic legend on verso of this miniature, it is a (executed in 1771) very important (and exremely rare for the current antique market) work of Madrid court artist, Naples-native Genaro Boltri (for another work of this artist in our collection, CLICK HERE). Moreover, the legend offers the identity of the sitter - young fashionable lady with manuscript in her hand. She is the 16/21-year-old (some sources imply that she was born in Sevilla in 1750, and some - in 1755) celebrated Spanish drama actress, Maria Bermejo (stage name - "La Bermeja"). In the 1780s, she was performing in Madrid "Teatro de los Royales sitios". She was "highly esteemed by the court for ther ability to play classical and neo-classical French roles, both in translations from the French ("Phedre") and imitations by budding Spanish authors"...

Genaro (also Gennaro, Jenaro) Boltri was born in 1730 in Naples and died on the 10th of April 1786 in Madrid. He was a pupil of Francesco Tomachello.
14th of November 1756 is a recorded date of his enrollment as a painter into the Royal Porcelain Manufactory Capodimonte. The surviving records of his high monthly salary of 20 ducats are indicative of Boltri's significant social standing. When his sponsor King Carlo IV of Naples became King Carlos III of Spain, the whole porcelain manufactory (including Boltri) relocated to Spain, where it was newly founded under the name of Fabbrica Buon Retiro. Together with Giovanni Battista del Torre, Baltri took over the management of the porcelain painting workrooms.
In his Spanish period, Boltri was repeatedly mentioned as author of miniatures with portraits of the members of Spanish Royal family and Spanish aristocracy.
