This portrait of a relatively young Napoleonic infantry officer bears on verso an old label with an authentic (handwritten in 1894 by sitter's great-grandson) legend. The latter legend informs that it is a portrait of "Oberstleutnant" (lieutenant-colonel;) J. H. (the second initial does indeed resemble the letter "H") Wild from Kirchberg, in canton St. Gallen, Switzerland.
The initials "J.H." of the sitter's given name could refer to the rather common names "Johann Heinrich" or "Joseph Heinrich". The search for either "Johann Heinrich" or "Joseph Heinrich" Wild, residents of the early 19th-century Kirchberg brought no results.
Yet, what if after all the second initial of the sitter's given name is not "H" but "J-b" (for "Jakob")? With that in mind, we immediately locate on the Web a mention of a (living in 1821 in Albicon - a suburb of Kirchberg, canton St. Gallen) "Wirt" (English: landlord) Johann Jakob Wild (1776-1852; in the early 1800s (period of this portrait's execution; in the aforementioned legend written by the sitter's great-grandson, the latter writes: "jedenfalls nach 1803" (English: "in any case, after 1803"), this man was twenty seven years of age, which is in full accordance with sitter's visual age. It is very likely that by 1821, Johann Jakob Wild was already a former (!) lieutenant-colonel who retired in Kirchberg to pursue some type of agricultural business.
Additionally, however, in the 1820s, there are records of a Stadrichter (judge) by the same name - Johann Jakob Wild - in St. Gallen. It seems that this name was very popular in the area...
