According to Saur, the artist N. Freund was of German origin and was active in North Germany. Lemoine-Bouchard in her turn insists that he was active in Paris between 1815-1818 (see our image nr.8). Obviously he was already active in the 1780s: his group portrait of Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette and Dauphin (Louis XVII) is housed in the Museum of Bordeaux. Similarly, Collection Tansey (see our image nr.9) is in possession of a very similar miniature that is considered to be a work of German artist Johann Christian Freund. It is unsigned, and we are certain that there is a misunderstanding in the old legend accompanying this piece: it is doubtlessly another work of "our" N. Freund.
