Rare in content, this miniature was painted by well-known, turn of the 19th century Bavarian artist Joseph Bernhard Einsle. Executed in 1800, it shows a young gentleman seating at his writing desk, atop it a freshly composed letter that he had just finished to write to his fiancé. The letter begins with the following text (the young man wrote it in poorly articulated German language alternated by Italian words; clearly, the sitter was an Italian living in Augsburg - the town, in which Einsle lived and worked):
"1800 /mio bellissimo /Memerosch, /Ich habe ihnen zu berichten /das die Protokol zu heyraten…" (English: "1800 /my dear Memerosch /I may inform you that the wedding proposal…"). Besides that, the sitter is portrayed with hand on his heart. Under his hand (and concealed by his frock-coat) hangs a miniature portrait of his bride (note the cord on which it hangs). Surely, he commissioned presented here miniature in order to commemorate his life's most fundamental (as we believe) occurrence - a wedding proposal to his fiancé and to document this most important (as he probably felt at the time) milestone.
Joseph Bernhard Einsle (1774 Goeggingen - 1829 Augsburg) was a well known portrait miniaturist in South Germany with many commissions of middle class customers. His first dated miniature of the King of Wuerttemberg is from 1803, although already in 1796 his name was mentioned in books as "Mahler (Maler., i.e. artist) in Augsburg". In 1806 Einsle married in his native town Goeggingen and from 1810 lived in Constanz at lake Bodensee). In 1817 he moved to Augsburg, where he lived - apart from short stays in Munich and Frankfurt a.M. - until his death in 1829.
