Although not in perfect condition (its upper right corner had been professionally restored (joined with an ivory segment and repainted), this large (16.6 x 11cm) miniature on ivory is nonetheless an outstanding quality collaborative work of renowned German couple of miniaturists - Hamburg artists (and "close friends") Heinrich Jakob Aldenrath and Friedrich Carl Groeger. The dog's collar bears their merged monogram "AG". Additionally, our comparison images nr.10-14 fully confirm the collective authorship of these two artists.
Heinrich Jakob Aldenrath (1775 Lubeck - 1844 Hamburg) was a pupil of J.J. Tischbein. Through the latter Aldenrath happened to meet his future companion, close friend and, eventually, partner - Friedrich Carl Groeger (1766-1838). Both artists attended Berlin and Dresden Academies, later completing their studies in Paris.
Aldenrath and Groeger worked for a number of years in Hamburg, Lubeck, Kiel and Copenhagen, executing their works jointly.
Friedrich Carl Groeger (1766 Ploen - 1838 Hamburg) was a son of a tailor and apprenticed to a turner and a house painter. Self-taught, he started to draw portraits and settled in Luebeck in 1785 where Heinrich Jacob Aldenrath became his pupil and soon a faithful friend. For many years these two artists worked together and a lot of the miniatures are signed with their two names. In 1789, they went to Berlin, then to Hamburg and in 1798 to Dresden. After a stay in Paris, Kiel and Copenhagen, they settled in Hamburg in 1814. Croeger also painted excellent portraits in oils and was a good lithographer.
