Johann Tobias Kaergling (Kärgling) was born on February 9 1780 in Augsburg, Bavaria and died on April 11, 1845 in Budapest. From 1794 to 1801 he studied at the School of Fine Arts of Augsburg. Later he moved to Vienna to study with Carl Agricola and Peter Krafft. At the time of Napoleonic Troops occupations of Vienna (1805 and 1809) he mainly worked as portrait miniaturist. In 1809, the artist settled in Budapest.
Provenance: Honolulu Nuseum, Hawaii, USA (sold through Ebay-broker as a part of collection of portrait miniatures; the museum was looking to replenish its funds for further acquisitions).
