Edouard Gelhay (1865-1938) "Boy with apples", pastel, 1900/10 3500 EUR
Edouard Gelhay (1865-1938) "Boy with apples", pastel, 1900/10
Executed in the early 1900s, this pastel by French artist Edouard Gelhay strongly resembles famous painting "Girl with peaches" (1887) by Russian artist Valentin Alexandrovich Serov, which was certainly familiar to Gelhay (see our image nr.8).
Edouard Gelhay (1865 Braine-sur-Vesles / Aisne - 1938 Paris) studied from 1875 in Paris under William Bouguereau, Alexandre Cabanel and Tony Ribert-Fleury. Gelhay spent the years 1906-1908 in North America and also visited Cuba. He regularly exhibited at the Salon de Paris. In 1908, he was awarded the Chevalier Cross of the Legion of Honor.
Our images nr.9-16 show several works of Gelhay that were offered at art auctions in the last years.
