This wonderful miniature strongly resembles works of great Parisian artist Jean-Baptiste Isabey (for comparison, see our image nr.8) - a detail that allowed us to presume that its author was a pupil of the latter.
In fact, the author was Isabey's town-fellow, known till today only through several miniatures. One of them, large miniature on ivory, showing Emperor Napoleon in coronation robes and signed: "Carbonnet. f.(ecit) /Nancy 1807" was sold on 24 May 2000 at Christie's London for GBP 4,700 (see our image nr.7). Basil S. Long in his, published in 1929 book "British Miniaturists" says artist's full name was John Baptist Carbonnet and he saw three miniatures by latter signed on the reverse: "By /John Carbonnet", they dated from ca. 1795 and were in French style. From the inscription it seemed likely that the artist worked then in England. Schidlof mentions a miniature by him (signed: "Carbonet") which was lent to the Berlin Exhibition, 1906; he supposes the artist worked in England as a French emmigrant during the Revolution. Fosket and Lemoine-Bouchard repeat this information. Nevertheless, mentions by artist in his signatures Fench town Nancy (in 1807 (portrait of Napoleon) and in 1813 (our case) mean he returned in early 1800s to France.
