This charming work presents great interest due to its subject and composition (the latter is typical for Italian school of portrait miniature painting). It is a round miniature on ivory showing the family of one Vincenzo del Negro.
A relatively young man, he is the head of his family, and is shown embracing his two little sons, while his wife is holding their third child - a little daughter. One also sees the other "members" of the family: a fierce looking pug (it seems almost that he is competing with Signore Vincenzo for the family headship) and his rival - a cat. The title, which is crowning the image, was written and dated by the artist; it reads: "La Famiglia di Vincenzo del Negro An(no) MDCCCI (1801)".

Without any doubt this miniature is a work of well-known Milanese artist Gaspare Betoldi. Our image nr.13 shows latter's, very similiar miniature in Musei Civici d'Arte Antica, Bologna.

Gaspare Betoldi was born in 1778 in Como and died in 1824 in Milan. His works have strongly resembled those of well-known miniaturist Giovanni Battista Gigola (to see the latter's works in our possession, CLICK HERE), which could be a strong sign of their collaboration. We suppose even that Betoldi was a pupil of Gigola.
Both artists shared the same clientele (Betoldi married Maria Anna Seibelloni from a wealthy Milanese aristocratic family, and Gigola worked for this family). His works can be viewed in various museums of Italy and abroad (see our additional images).

Provenance:
1) Edward Grosvenor Paine Collection
2) Bonhams, London, 21st November 1997, Lot 121 (see our image nr.12)
3) German private collection
