Offered here is an extremely rare religious oil painting by well-known Franco-English 19th-century artist, Casimir Carbonnier.
The author, Casimir Carbonnier, was born in Beauvais, on May 24th 1787 and died in Paris on March 20th 1873. He was a pupil of Augustin van den Berghe, Jacques-Louis David and Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres. Carbonnier successfully debuted at the Parisian Salon in 1812 with "Virgile récitant l'Enéide", arousing admiration of Caroline Bonoparte, who proceeded to commission him with painting her own portrait. During the Restauration (1815-1836) he lived in London, where was active as drawing teacher and miniaturist. He also exhibited miniatures at the Royal Academy.
Besides the aforementioned portraits of Duchess of Cumberland, Carbonnier portrayed numerous other royalties, among others - Queen of Naples. Some of his portraits were engraved. Shortly after returning to France (1836), he entered the community of the Lazarists (in 1839) and took the name "Frere Francois" ("Brother Francois"). Since that time, he mainly made religious paintings for Lazarist buildings in Paris. His wife, whom he married in London, and who accompanied him to Paris, had also joined monastery: she entered the Order of Notre-Dame des Sept Douleurs in Marseille.
Our additional image shows a portrait of Carbonnier, which was sold at 2003 art auction.
