We are dealing here with a profile portrait of a Prussian infantry officer, whose identity is offered in the old authentic legend on verso, written (according to the style of handwriting) in the 1st half of the 19th century.
His name was Maximilian von Chambaud-Charrier. He was born on October 23, 1756. His death occurred on November 30, 1806 as a consequence of a lethal wound which he received twenty four days prior, on November 6, 1806, during the Battle of Lübeck (Prussians and Swedes fought against the Napoleonic Army - CLICK HERE). He took part in this battle as a major in ranks of the Prussian Infantry Regiment No. 54 ("von Natzmer"). However, several years before that, von Chambaud-Charrier was still an officer of another infantry regiment: from 1797, he was aide-de-camp of Lieutenant-General Johann Leopold von Thadden and was reckoned in the Infantry Regiment No 3 ("von Thadden"; his boss was the chief (proprietor) of this regiment). If in 1797 he was still a staff-captain, the following (1798) year brought him a promotion to captain. We suppose that by ca. 1805 he was promoted to major and transferred to the 54th Regiment. Back in the late 1790s, he married the widowed daughter-in-law of General von Thadden, Charlotte von Thadden, nee von Billerbeck, who outlived him by many years (in 1821, she was still alive).
The (visible in this portrait) coat's orange revers and collar were initially yellow (light yellow-brown (or "chamois") was the regimental color of the 54th Regiment); the yellow color has clearly transformed into orange with time (clearly the pastel was hung in the spot with direct exposure to sunrays). For similar case of color transformation, see our web #38630.
