Offered here is a portrait of Bremen Senator, Friedrich Wilhelm Heineken (October 18, 1787 Bremen - April 2, 1848 Bremen; for his biography, see our image nr.5).
Rudolf Friedrich Suhrlandt (1781 Ludwigslust - 1862, Schwerin) was a very important German portraitist and lithographer. He began his studies under his father Johann Heinrich Suhrlandt, and in 1799 he became a student of the Dresden Academy, having had there various teachers such as Schoenau, Johann David Schubert, Seydelmann and Grassi. From 1803 he studied at the Viennese Academy under Fueger, Maurer, Caucig, Lampi, and then Zauner. In Vienna he painted portraits of the Russian and Polish aristocrats, in whose families he gave drawing lessons. In 1808 he moved to Rome, where he met again Canova, whom he knew from Vienna. There he entered the Lucas Academy stablishing friendship with Thorvaldsen, W.Shadow, Johann Christian Reinhart and many other members of the German artist colony in Rome. Also Ingres and other French painters from the French Academy in Rome counted as his friends. In 1812 he went to Naples to make portraits of Murat and other important persons of that Kingdom. In 1816 he came back to Germany to be the royal painter of Friedrich Franz I Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin and stablished himself at his native town Ludwigslust. He became a professor in 1817 and travelled throughout Germany and Europe painting portraits of the high aristocracy in Bremen, Luebeck, Hamburg, Stockholm, St. Petersburg, London, Amsterdan, Paris... From 1842 until his death he lived in Schwerin.
