According to the authentic old legends on versos of both works, we are dealing here with a pair of portraits of, respectively, Bremen senator (from 1782) and "Stadtrichter" (city judge from 1792), Dr. Georg Oelrichs (1754-1809; see our images nr.14-15) and his wife Friederike Dorothea, nee von Post (1766-1849; see our image nr.16).
Although this pair of portraits displays strong resemblance to works of Germany's best late 18th-century pastelist Johann Heinrich Schroeder (CLICK HERE; also , for comparison, CLICK HERE TO SEE WORKS OF THIS ARTIST IN OUR POSSESSION), we strongly believe that they were after all not painted by Schroeder (his biographers never mentioned the artist's ever staying in Bremen; on the contrary, it is known that in the period of late 1790s - early 1800s (note the sitter's dress and hairstyle), he permanently lived in Berlin (over 400 km far from Bremen)).
What we are certain of, on the other hand, is that the portraits were painted by Schroeder's contemporary and probably his pupil, Johann August Schwartz (see his biography below). It is known that the latter was active in Bremen between 1803 and 1807 (see our image nr.17; also CLICK HERE), which however does not exclude the possibility of his previous frequent visits to this city. In fact, there are records indicating that he worked in Braunschweig (Brunswick) - a town located only 170 km far from Bremen (reachable by a coach in a few hours' time).
Johann Christian August Schwartz (1756 Hildesheim - 1814 Brunswyck) worked in Brunswyck (Braunschweig), Dresden, Hamburg, and exhibited at the Berlin Academy in 1800. He was evidently close to Johann Heinrich Schroeder (1757-1812): the attribution of works between them is complicated by the number of pastels signed by Schwartz which are in fact versions of works by Schroeder; many confusions still persist.
