Gabor (Gabriel) Melegh was born on May 14, 1801 in Hungarian town Versec (now Vršac in Serbia) and died on April 4, 1832 in Vienna (some sources imply that he died in 1835 in Trieste). He studied at the Vienna Academy and was active in Vienna, Versec and Timisoara (Temesvár) as a painter of genre subjects and portraits in oils and watercolor, as well as miniature. Melegh also worked as an engraver. Schidlof writes about him the following: "Melegh was a very good artist. His works show a strong influence of Daffinger…".
