As shows our image nr.10 it is a work of female miniaturist from Lyon, Mme Julie Bertod, nee Ferlat. One finds in Schidlof (vol. 1 and vol. 3) another, artist's own replica of this portrait. This replica is clearly signed: Julie Berthod.
The legend on verso shares some details about the sitter of this portrait - a young lady playing guitar (her dress and hairstyle reflect the fashion of ca. 1830) - that appear to be inaccurate. The legend refers to her as "Madame Guyemer, nee Mlle Lyons". To begin with, the name "Guyemer" does not seem to have ever existed; rather, what was meant was the widely spread name "Guynemer". Further, our Web research delivered (see image nr.12) a mention of Mme Louise Antonine Guynemer (her wedding took place in 1856), whose maiden name was "Lyon" (and not "Lyons"!), and who was born in 1837. Based on this information, she could not have been the same adult woman who is depicted in our ca. 1830 portrait…
Moreover, we are sure to deal with a typical case of a transformed through several generations family legend. Only correct word which we can read now is "Lyons" (rather "Lyon"). This word , meaning town where artist Julie Berthod was active, initiated the following, erroneous legend...
Mme Julie Berthod (Berthaud, Berthot-Ferlat; nee Ferlat or Ferlaz) was active in Lyon at the 1st half of the 19th century. Schidlof says: "Artist of quality, absolutely unknown of whom I know only one miniature" (He means the signed replica of our portrait. - B.W.) "... this miniature seems to be a work of a professional miniaturist with an exceptional talent ..."
