Offered here is a Russian, early 19th-century miniature on ivory of a superior quality. It is a portrait of Tsar Paul I' widow and mother of two consecutive Russian Emperors (Alexander I and Nikolai I), Empress Maria Fedorovna of Russia, nee Princess Sophie Dorothea of Wuerttemberg (1759-1828; CLICK HERE and HERE). She is depicted here in the last years of her life (i.e. a few years before her death on 5 November 1828). On this portrait, she wears a small Imperial crown inlaid with pearls, a red gown and a royal ermine robe. She bears the blue sash and breast star of the Russian Imperial Order of St. Andrew the First-Called.

This miniature is an artist's own replica of one of three miniatures, inserted side by side into the lid of a box of gold, silver, enamel and tortoishell, which is now on display in Metropolitan Museum, New York (see our image nr.6). Author of these three miniatures - respectively portraits of Grand Duke Michail Pavlovich, of his motherr Maria Fedorovna and of Michail's newlywed wife, Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna (the box was surely made as a memorial (presentation?) piece to celebrate the Michail's wedding on 19 February 1824) - was working between 1817-1825 in St.Petersburg well-known French artist Anthelme François Lagrenée, Chiefly known in that period through his large miniatures, made with watercolors on card (see for example our web # 41075 ) he however worked also in the technique of a miniature painting on ivory (see our web # 38347).
It is very possible that our miniature, like her (some smaller) twin in Metropolitan Musem, formerly also decorated a lid of a golden, presentation box.

Anthelme Francois Lagrenée was born in Paris in 1774 as a son of French painter Louis-Francois Lagrenée. He was a pupil of his father and later - of Vincent. He exhibited at the Parisian Salon from 1799 to 1831. During the revolution Lagrenée served in the French army, where he meticulously studied the anatomy of horses, thus becoming a very fine horse-draughtsman. He was also a very good portraitist (mainly miniaturist); was also very well known as a good imitator of antique cameos. In 1817-1825 the artist lived and worked in St. Petersburg where he had a great success and did portraits of numerous members of aristocracy, as well as of the Empress Alexandra Fedorovna. As a portraitist (as already mentioned) Lagrenée painted chiefly miniatures on ivory and watercolour portraits (sic!), but known are his historical and animalistic paintings in oils. Schidlof writes: "Lagrenée was an excellent miniaturist whose works show a certain influence on Isabey, but his "pointille" is finer in the faces than with the pupils of latter". Miniatures and watercolour portraits of this artist belong to collections of Louvre (Paris), Hermitage and Russian Museum (St. Petersburg), Tretyakov Gallery and Historical Museum (Moscow), etc., etc.

Our images nr.7- 9 show several miniatures on ivory by this artist which were offered in the last years at the international art auction market
