Housed in a gold frame with hairwork (sitter's and his mother's (?) hair) on verso, it is a wonderful, premium quality miniature with portrait of a highly aristocratic boy. Our image nr. 8 shows a clips from Neil Jeffares' "Dictionary of pastellists before 1800" with another portrait of his, executed in pastel by German artist Johann Christian August Schwartz. In his entry to this portrait Mr. Jeffares proposes an altternative for sitter's identity - either the latter is Prince Willem Frederik Karl of Orange-Nassau (1797-1881) or Prince Carl Bernhard of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach (1792-1862). The miniature (it is a work of Berlin artist Gustav Friedrich Amalus Taubert) is clearly signed and dated 1799. In that year the candidate No.1, Prince of Orange-Nassau was 2-year-old. In contrary the sitter looks for minimum 7-8. Exactly in age of 7 was in 1799 Mr. Jeffares' second candidate, Prince of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach. Our images nr.9-10 show two other portraits of his - as a little boy and as a 20-year-old man. Great resemblance with our sitter!!
For extensive biography of Prince Car Bernhard see our image nr.11.

Gustav Friedrich Amalius Taubert (1755 Berlin - 1839 Berlin) was a son and pupil of the miniaturist Johann Friedrich Taubert. He attended the Academy of Berlin, where he studied under portrait painter P.J. Bardou. Taubert painted portraits in oils and in pastel, historical and genre paintings in oil, caricatures, and miniatures on ivory, enamel and porcelain.
In 1782 he worked in Dresden, followed by two years in Vienna; from 1785 to 1797 he lived in Danzig, where he did several portraits of King Stanislav August. In 1801 Taubert joined the Porcelain Factory of Berlin, where he worked until 1825. Works of this artist can be seen in various German and Polish museums.

This miniature is described in the dictionary "Les Peintres et Miniature actifs en France 1650-1850" by Nathalie Lemoine-Bouchard (published in spring 2008; p. 480) (as a portrait of an unknown boy)).
